Stella Lucy's Gluten Free Market

The one stop shop for everything GLUTEN FREE!

I recently visited their San Clemente location and was amazed to step foot into a grocery store where I didn't have to read EVERY single label! I can't even remember the last time I was able to have such a carefree grocery shopping experience.

Stella Lucy's was started based on the fact that the owner was tired of visiting multiple grocery stores in order to get everything on her weekly grocery list. Stella Lucy's carries a wide selection of bars, baking mixes, breads, condiment & sauces, cookies & brownies, desserts & pastries, spices & seasonings, meet & seafood, package meals & kits, soups, and vitamins & supplements.

Not only does Stella Lucy's provide a substantial selection of food products, they also carry non-food items including: books, DVDs, kitchen items, skin and hair care products.

Welcome to Gluten Free CHOCOLATE Heaven!

Whole Foods is a short, tempting walk from my office. I was delighted to walk over to grab a quick bite for lunch last week. While I was waiting in the checkout line, Vosges Haut-Chocolat caught my eye, not only did my mouth start watering looking at every flavor but some flavors are also GLUTEN FREE.

Vosges' exotic truffles are made from the finest ingredients from around the world. Some of their most popular flavors include chocolate blended with coconut, mushrooms, ginger and wasabi, chilies, bacon, bananas, lemon zest, goji berry, peppermint, butter toffee, macadamia nut, and peppercorn. Each flavor has a story, every bite takes you on a journey through various spices, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, and nuts all from indigenous cultures.

After pondering for several minutes on which one to splurge on, I decided on the classic Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar. I was overjoyed with the first bite- a rich blend of chocolate with a soft peanut butter filling, lightly coated with sea salt. Sweet & salty what a treat!

Please be advised not all flavors are gluten free. Click HERE to view Vosges' Vegan & Gluten Free options.

Their chocolates are great gifts for friends, family, co-workers, or best of all YOURSELF!

Enjoy!

I heart Grandma's Funnel Cake

One thing I miss the most when first diagnosed were the famous and fabulous dishes I always grew up with while visiting Grandma Chooch in Pennsylvania. From homemade donuts to lemon meringue pie, everything was made with a lot of love and unfortunately a lot flour. One of my favorites- the classic funnel cake, has been a summer staple in my family for decades.

After the discovery of Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Baking Flour- my mom and I began experimenting with my Grandma's traditional recipes to make gluten free.
Once all the ingredients were mixed together I was happily surprised to find the consistency of the batter was similar to using regular flour. Unlike most wheat flour substitutes, there is no guessing game as how much to use. The recipe calls for 2 cups flour- I can used 2 cups. No guessing game here!

Below is Grandma Chooch's classic Funnel Swirl Cake. I hope your family enjoys it as much as mine does!

Ingredients:

3 eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups oil
Optional: whip cream and raspberries

Heat flying pan with 2 cups oil. Beat eggs, milk, sugar, flour, salt, and baking powder until smooth. Once oil is hot, use a small funnel to pour batter onto pan. Apply batter generously in a circle pattern. Once brown flip once. Sprinkle powder sugar while still hot. Enjoy with fresh fruit!

Gourmet Food Leader, Williams-Sonoma Acknowledges the Gluten Free Diet!

One thing I love about my friends and family are the constant text messages, emails and calls- "Did you know so and so has gluten free this?" or "I thought about you, I saw gluten free on the menu at the restaurant I was at last weekend."

There is not a greater feeling than knowing someone is looking out for you and can't wait to share the news that makes us, Celiacs, just as excited. I received a text message from a great friend from college this past weekend who always has her eye out for everything gluten free-

"Melissa! Williams-Sonoma has gluten free baking mixes!!!!!

Great news to me, because I had no idea! I immediately got on the web and found out they have 4 new baking products, all of which are gluten free.

Williams-Sonoma has teamed up with Chef Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc restaurant and Bouchon Bakery to create all-natural gluten free baking mixes and flour.

Cup4Cup Gluten Free Flour is perfect for replacing all flours in dessert, and main dish recipes. One 3lb. bag for $19.95.

Bouchon Gluten-Free Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix- a mixture of premium Callebaut chocolate, Nielsen-Massey vanilla and bittersweet chocolate chips. The cookies are easy to prepare- just add butter and an egg. 1 box, 1lb. 6 oz. approximately 12 cookies for $19.95.

Ad Hoc Gluten-Free Pancake & Waffle Mix- uses Cup4Cup gluten-free flour blend, milk, butter, and eggs to prepare this classic breakfast staple. Each box contains 2-mix packets- each yielding 4 waffles or 8 pancakes for $17.95.

Ad Hoc Gluten-Free Brownie Mix- uses Guittard cocoa for their decadent taste. One box makes 16 brownies for $18.95

Williams-Sonoma, is one store I love to browse through whether I buy a few pieces or just leave with a few more ideas, the store is filled high with picturesque table sets, every cookware and bake ware item you can imagine and now gluten free baking mixes! Lets be a honest- a deadly combination to your wallet but not your gluten free diet!

Thanks Williams-Sonoma!

Traders Joe's- My Saving Grace...literally

Contrary to popular belief- Trader Joe's is a cost effective alternative for gluten free grocery store shopping. When first diagnosed with Celiac I felt I had to shop at all high end specialty stores in order to be able to eat again, boy was I wrong.

After graduating from college and starting my first job I was determined to find a solution to the horrid weekly grocery store run that didn't gobble up every paycheck. One day I decided to step into Traders Joe's and haven't looked backed since. Gluten free consumers have the privilege of clearly marked items lining the aisles. Trader Joe's has designed a gluten free system in which all products have the following label on the packaging and shelf price tag.

Before putting your grocery list together check out Trader Joe's online list of gluten-free products and helpful shopping tips. Trader Joe's No Gluten Ingredients Product List

Below is a list of my favorite items I make sure to pick up once every few weeks for snacks, desserts, or everyday meals. It doesn't get any easier than that!

Great ANYTIME of the day

When you're in the mood to indulge
Add peanut butter chips for extra goodness

Pairs well with a cup of yogurt

Who can say no to peanut butter?

Perfect for dipping grilled cheese sandwiches
Great for quesadillas!
Perfect with a morning coffee or glass of milk
Yummy dipping for vegetables
Perfect for a hot summer day

Thank you Traders!

Sincerely,

Gluten Free Grocery store shoppers!
