The Cheese Shop AKA The YUM Shop

My coworkers are fans of this hidden gem and were excited to take me "the rookie" to lunch on a beautiful Tuesday. As soon as I got word we were venturing to this La Jolla "hot spot" I got online to figure out what I could possibly order. Main dish aside, I was stoked to find one of their most popular items a flourless oatmeal cookie. I called ahead to verify the ingredients and sure enough

Cheese Shop Cookies

OATMEAL COOKIES MADE WITHOUT FLOUR!!! The recipe for these delicious cookies was given to us while growing up in Long Beach, California, in the early 1960’s --from the old lady next door, Hazel --and it was an old recipe even then!!! Hazel always said that she ate them when she was a little girl, so it’s easy to imagine someone baking them well over 100 years ago! We still use the same recipe and bake them daily. THESE OATMEAL'S ARE FAMOUS!!!
Who needs lunch when you can eat 5 of these pieces of gold? I highly recommend this local favorite, and can't wait to go back and sit outside in the beautiful California summer sun with a gluten free cookie in hand. I ordered 4 to go and went on my merry way back to work with some gluten free goodies; I would say that was a successful lunch!

Gluten Free @ Petco Park

"Take me out to the ballgame, take me out with the crowd, buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks...or buy me something gluten free.." Not a problem!

At Petco Park they have all their bases covered when it comes to gluten-free.

This past weekend I attended the high scoring Padres vs. Giants baseball game hosted at Petco Park, here in San Diego. I had heard of a gluten free food kiosk but wanted to see it with my own eyes. TA DAAA!

The kiosk was located on the second level, next to Section 104, located directly behind the "Mercado" sign.

The stand attendant was full of energy and excited to share what gluten free goodness he had. The menu included hot dogs, hamburgers, beer and hummus & vegetables. Both hot dog and hamburger buns are from a local San Diego vendor and gluten free bakery- GNI, Gluten Not Included.

GNI offers a wide selection of gluten free products: pizza crusts, croutons, cupcakes, brownies, muffins, and a great selection of cookies. It's your one stop shop for everything gluten free.
Take me out to the ballgame any day now with these options!

Negative- Padres lost, Positive- I tried the Gluten Free Hot Dog! It is $4.00 at the “Friar Fit” Stand in the Mercado Plaza. The bread was a bit crumbly, but I can’t complain it was great sitting at the baseball game enjoying a hot dog like every other fan.

CPK Goes Gluten Free!

UPDATE January 5, 2012 California Pizza Kitchen has pulled the gluten-free crust option from its menu at all locations. CPK says that it is reviewing the pizza prep methods with an eye toward bringing it back in the future.

Great news for all you pizza lovers…California Pizza Kitchen just added a gluten free crust option to their menu. We can now enjoy over 29 of their original pizzas gluten free style including one of my favorites; the Original BBQ chicken. Click here for CPK's Gluten-free menu

A note from CPK-"We recommend that guests with food allergies or special dietary needs consult with a restaurant manager prior to placing an order to ask if the posted information is accurate and represents the menu items sold at the participating location."

What I have learned over the years- ALWAYS ASK. There have many numerous times I was too embarrassed or didn’t want to “annoy” the waiter or waitress with specific questions, only at the end of the meal feeling unfortunately very sick. I look at it this way, the more questions and awareness a Celiac can bring to the restaurant industry, the sooner our communities will gain a greater understanding of Celiac Disease and the effects of cross contamination.

Start the weekend off right with a slice of pizza heaven from CPK!
